Shollenberger Park
Today, Sierra and I took a late morning walk at Shollenberger Park in Petaluma, CA. I had to pick up my bread flour at Central Milling in Petaluma, so I searched for a park near there. Since Sierra could take a break in her school work today, she came with me (yay!).
After checking out the website: https://www.sonomacounty.com/outdoor-activities/shollenberger-park , I decided that the 2.2 mile loop along the Petaluma River and wetlands was perfect for the amount of time we had. We had a little bit of trouble finding it -- Google maps took us into a corporate center, and we could not find an entrance to the trail, but after some weaving around through parking lots, we found it! It has a low profile sign into a driveway sandwiched between two office buildings, then there is a parking lot with nice bathrooms at the trail head. We set off on our way, and we had a super nice walk with barely anyone else there, and definitely at a safe distance, so no masks! This is an easy flat walk with lots of benches and bird watching signs and viewing spots. I am an avid bird watcher, so I was loving seeing all the water birds...Sierra not so much, so we didn't linger too much. We enjoyed walking a long the Petaluma River, and we saw a tug boat pushing a barge upstream with piles of gravel on it. Not something I see every day. It was gorgeous scenery with the Petaluma hills surrounding us, beautiful blue skies, temperature in the low 50's and very still water. Here are a few photos, these are looking South as the Petaluma River heads out to San Pablo Bay.
Although its an easy, flat trail, we intentionally kept up a good pace and got some good exercise!
There were two offshoot trails that I want to go back and check out. One goes towards the Sheraton and the drawbridge, and the other goes South through more wetlands. All the trails are bike friendly as well!
I would definitely go back here, and next time with binoculars, so I can get a good look at all the birds. I'm thinking it would be good to walk here with our Petaluma friends :-)
Nice! I can't wait to read about more trails. I appreciate the notes of being bike friendly. Keep it up, friend!
